Role: Co-ordinator (subscriptions and outreach), Red Pepper magazine

£26,500 per annum, pro rata for three days a week (£15,900). Based in our London office near Old Street.

Red Pepper is a leading independent magazine of left politics and culture. Inspired by socialism, feminism and green politics, the magazine is written by and for people organising for a better world.

We are a non-profit print and web publication which seeks to be a resource for all movements working towards a world based on equality, meaningful democracy and freedom. We provide a unique resource in strengthening the connections and common spaces for debate for all those who share a commitment to social change, in Britain and internationally.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and organised person to join our team of staff and volunteers, to help us expand our readership base.

Description of tasks

The Red Pepper Co-ordinator is responsible for two areas of work within Red Pepper. Firstly events, partnerships, fundraising and magazine promotion – in other words the co-ordination of non-editorial aspects of the magazine; and secondly subscription management. Although the two areas overlap in some respects, we expect you would spend an average of 2 days on co-ordination tasks and 1 day on subscriptions management per week.

Co-ordination:

• Lead on and assist with organising Red Pepper public events.
• Develop and implement fundraising campaigns for individual donors.
• Recruit and manage volunteers for administrative, promotional and fundraising tasks.
• Respond to and manage the main email account.
• Maintain and develop relationships between Red Pepper and external events – including the management of stalls and media partnerships.
• Maintain and expand the ‘Pepperista’ email list.
• Coordinate meetings of the Red Pepper board, including circulating agendas and taking minutes.
• Liaise with the editors of the forthcoming and current issues of Red Pepper to ensure contributors have been sent magazines.
• Work with board members and editors to write and submit occasional grant applications to funders.
• Any other tasks which may be required by the board from time to time.

Subscriptions:

• Communicate with subscribers via the subscriptions email account, answering all subscription enquiries.
• Maintain the subscriptions database and ensure all the data is up to date.
• Monitor subscriptions progression, keeping accurate records of growth.
• Negotiate and manage all subscription offers and marketing campaigns.
• Undertake regular lapsed subscriber research.
• Create targeted subscription emails and social media posts.
• Coordinate and implement a renewals cycle.
• Monitor progress and create reports that provide regular and accurate data of performance against KPIs and targets.

Person specification

You need to have:

• Excellent organisational skills – including the ability to manage your own workload efficiently.
• Creative ideas and the ability to show initiative, clinch deals and take tasks to completion.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and experience of an outward-facing role, e.g. with readers, customers, members or subscribers.
• Marketing ability, including effective copy-writing and good attention to detail in the production of printed and online materials.
• Ability to use initiative and work well in sometimes informal organisational structures.
• A conscientious, reliable and professional attitude to work.
• Good general IT skills.
• A willingness to work evenings and weekends when required (with time off in lieu).
• A passion for progressive politics and journalism, and commitment to the politics and principles which inform the work of Red Pepper.
• Familiarity with social media including Instagram.

Desirable or additional skills:

• Experience of working with databases and ability to produce basic subscriptions/membership reports.

• Experience of web content management systems such as WordPress.

We are also interested in other skills you could bring to the team. For example, public speaking, photography, video editing, etc.

Reporting and reviewing your work

You will report to, and participate in, our monthly management committee which oversees the implementation of strategic decisions and reacts to ongoing developments. The management committee is made up of the two directly-employed staff plus selected board members and editors.

In the initial stages of the post, representatives of the management committee will be available for line-management discussions on a more frequent basis.

Reviews of work will be carried out in conjunction with the management committee and via one-to-one line-management meetings. This is an opportunity for the chosen candidate to assess their work and see how to develop their skills, to agree targets and objectives and to structure an ongoing plan of work.

Pay and conditions

The gross salary for the role is £26,500 per year pro rata (so £15,900 for three days a week). Normally the role will involve working three week days but time off in lieu may be arranged for weekend or evening working (e.g. for meetings or events).

Paid annual leave is 25 days per year, plus bank holidays (15 days pro-rata for this role).
