Join our Editorial Collective

The Red Pepper Editorial Collective (EC) is responsible for commissioning and editing content for our quarterly print magazine and website. Previously, editors have worked in a volunteer capacity. As of 2020, each quarterly cycle will be managed by up to eight EC members, all of whom will receive a solidarity stipend for their work.

We are looking for people to join our team, and welcome expressions of interest from established, new, or emerging voices in journalism who share our principles and values.

EC Member Core Responsibilities:

  • Support magazine production in an editorial capacity:
    • Attend three meetings per quarter, in person or virtually (meetings are generally scheduled to take place on a weekday 6.30-8.30pm).
    • Commission and edit, or review and provide feedback, on articles for print.
    • Communicate with fellow EC, production, and administrative team members via email throughout the production cycle.
  • Support online publication in an editorial capacity:
    • Commission, edit and publish at least one online article per month.
    • Provide secondary editorial support on at least one online article per month.
  • Monitor submission inbox (rota-based/shared basis).
  • Manage, update, and maintain shared working space, including calendar.

Additional occasional responsibilities include:

  • Support the revision/creation of useful documents (i.e. submission guidelines, style guides, guides to publishing online etc.)
  • Attend the Red Pepper AGM and contribute to wider project development via email.
  • Help at fundraising and other events, for example as a facilitator, speaker, live-tweeter, etc. and support digital fundraising efforts via social media platforms.
  • Help recruit and train new EC members.

Experience: Our ethos is that each editor contributes a different skill-set to the collective, with responsibilities shared according to individuals’ strengths. All new members will be provided with training and will be partnered with an existing editor as a mentor for at least their first quarterly cycle. Prior experience in journalism (commissioning, writing, editing, transcribing) and project management, and familiarity with relevant software (Google Drive, WordPress, design, audio/video editing platforms) are all welcome, but none are essential.

Time Commitment: Approx. 24hrs per month / 12 days per quarter.

Pay: Stipend of at least £500 per quarter (amount may rise depending on number of active editors / successful fundraising).
