Great article - I had the honour of being on a panel with Joe Sacco at a Stanford University event on comics journalism back in May. A real innovator, dedicated journalist and truly great bloke.

The first example of Japanese comics journalism that springs to mind is Manga No Shimbun (http://newsmanga.com/) though there's currently no english translation available. Here's a WIRED article on it though: http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/05/st_manganews/

There's a wealth of other Japanese creators who use comics to chronicle real-life events, such as Tatsumi, or more famously, the Barefoot Gen series of graphic novels detailing an eyewitness account of life in Japan in the wake of the atomic bombs.

Cartoonmovement.com is a great site (thanks Josh), as is www.graphicjournos.com, and my own comics journalism is collected at www.archcomix.com if you're looking for more examples online.

Erm, I can't think offhand of any Japanese creators of comics journalism. Do you have any names, David Rubinson? Also, since Fantagraphics published Crumb's works, surely Thompson would have mentioned a title or two.

I remember that in the 1980s, WATCHMEN writer Alan Moore did script a graphic novel called "Brought To Light" which looked at the CIA's history.

This article's a great start on the subject. I'm starting a new Comics Journalism anthology called The Cartoon Picayune, at cartoonpicayune.com. Also worth checking out is Matt Bor's The Cartoon Movement.
