The euro was supposed to bring economic convergence and political stability, leading to perfect economic and political union. As Keynes observed, “He who controls the currency controls the country.”

But the euro is a weapon of mass destruction. The EU forces members into a Procrustean bed, hacking them into fitting it. Under the EU’s recent proposals, Greece has to cut its budget by 20 per cent of GDP by next year. No country has ever gone through such a disaster. To blame Greece is to excuse the EU, just as to blame only the bankers for the crisis is to excuse the EU.

The EU is ordering Greece to change its constitution to make paying its debt its top priority. The EU wants ‘an enhanced and permanent presence on the ground in Greece’. The infamous Lisbon Treaty gave the EU the powers to install governments it wants, as in Italy.

The GDP of the whole EU is down 1.7 per cent, the eurozone down 1.9 per cent. The EU, not just the euro, is strangling recovery.
Every EU member country should be raising the demand -Out of the EU now!
