Richard manages to miss the point - the EU is very unpopular.
The recent 30th annual British Social Attitudes report says, “Euroscepticism is firmly in the ascendancy, with a record 67 per cent wanting either to leave or for Britain to remain but the EU to become less powerful.”
The RMT, aware of the threat that the EU poses to our public services, rightly calls for a referendum on our EU membership.
What does Richard have to say about this? Nothing.
What does the rest of the Trotskyist left say about this? It damns those against the EU as 'nationalists', implicitly backing the capitalist EU as 'internationalist'.
The RMT is leading the working class in its consistent, principled opposition to the EU.

UKIP is an attempt to put an electable face on very ugly reactionary politics. It masks much of its real agenda in the interests of electability.

This paragraph illustrates an underside that is alive and well in UKIP:

The party has been aggressively ‘exposed’ in the press. The freshest of revelations included the identification of Nazis and cranks from other right-wing subcultures in UKIP’s midst, the republication of racist or eugenic views from social media, and screenshots of Holocaust-denying, weapons-brandishing, sieg-heiling members.

A typical left wing article seizing on the few extreme members & comments which have slipped through the Ukip net in order to frighten the electorate & ignoring the mainstream & popular policies which so many people are finding a breath of fresh air. All parties have a few fringe members who do not represent most of their party, yes even the Labour party & their left wing cousins but the only thing you can use to sully their popular appeal is a few fringe members who have used the freedom within the party (no whipping) to utter comments out of step. You just don't get it, Ukip are so popular because of their policies not despite them & the three main parties who all speak alike & have held the electorate in contempt by denying them a say on Europe, Immigration etc are running scared & with good reason, its called democracy folks!
