I am much more inclined to see the current agitation in Spain as a German move to keep the euro's value low until the German election in 2013. The low euro is generating an ongoing boom in Germany and I have noticed in the past that every time the euro's value starts to rise, some "mini-crisis" pops up just long enough to bring the euro back down again! There is, of course, an alternative to the EU and the euro. It's called the American jackboot and anyone who thinks that the Americans will deliver more socialism than the EU is pipedreaming! Francois Hollande's election would no doubt be a step forward, as would an SPD victory in Germany next year, and, in any event, the present austerity measures are, by very definition, short-trem crisis measures designed to ward off Wall St's attack on the euro. They are working very well and it will no doubt be possible to ease them a bit fairly soon. Opinion polls (Wikipedia!) show Pasok's vote increasing in Greece, which probly means that the present Greek government will be re-elected on 6 May. Equally, polls show Ireland ratifying the Fiscal Compact on 31 May. I wouldn't set too much store by the United Left in Spain though. They got ony 3% of the vote in the last general election and only 5% in the earlier regional elections and are very much the junior partners of the Socialists in Andalucia and elsewhere. Equally, the 'indignados' have tended to reject all ideologies, as is normal for young Europeans nowadays. Thus, the idea that the 'indignados' would turn to the old fogeys of discredited communism is just plain silly. Thus, Mr Navascues trying to hype the recent strike is in fact a tacit admission of defeat. The young, all over Europe, want the EU and the euro to survive, and to improve the functioning of both. The are not interested in opening a new gap in the EU's walls!
