Despite horrendous weather conditions (gale-force blasts driving very heavy rain) on the evening of the 6th October 'Cuts' Public Meeting, attendance was quite good but the group still faces an uphill struggle to attract active supporters for its campaign.
Details of work done, etc can be viewed on the group's web site -

Very best wishes to all who work for a fairer society.

Very heartening to read here the very thing I have advocated at meetings of Furness Against the Cuts - we have no elected 'officials', different individuals each time volunteer to conduct the meeting and record 'decisions' and all individuals have the opportunity to speak without interruption. We are not a fund-raising group so have no treasurer or bank account. FAC is an umbrella group which does not campaign on behalf of anyone - but we will provide backing for, say, a disability group or persons campaigning against loss of benefits by use of a stall, a loud-hailer, communications through the website and on Facebook and, most importantly of all, PEOPLE to hand out leaflets and talk to the public. To date, two local Trade Union Councils, all the local unions, community groups, charities and churches have kept away from FAC. Some members of Barrow and Furness Pensioners' Association, however, have welcomed the organisation and make good use of it. Perhaps, after our second public meeting, to be held in October, things may begin to change. The struggle to generate public opposition to the austerity measures being imposed by this ConDem government will continue.
