"The continuity is striking"? What nonsense. There were no warring factions in the old Libya. There was no xenophobia against black people in the old Libya. There were no gangs of armed hooligans roaming the streets.

The first part of this article provides an interesting overview of the development of the NTC, but the second half draws a sweeping conclusion not substatnited by the facts. Tommy seems to see claiming a major shift in the nature of the NTC from an organisation reflecting the "dissidents, the diaspora, and the Islamists" to one that has a "striking continuity" with the Gaddafi regime. But, as he himself shows, former regime members were key figures in the NTC from the start. The recent appointment of an Interim Government has reduced their role, with Abdurrahim El Keib, the Interim PM, regarded by most analysts as a compromise technocratic figure. I certainly can't find any great significanc, as Tommy suggests,in his appointment over Ali Tarhouni, who had strongly pro-US and free market views.
The really important development has been the decision of the Government to convene an elected Assembly to draw up the new constitution. This has already sparked off public debate on the issue of women's representation, and we can be sure that there will be much more to follow. The left needs to break its bad habit of leaving the Libyan people out of the equation when discussing Libya.

The people are happy, they are enjoying their freedom, at least they get the chance to vote. I say good luck to them and nobody can say they didn't earn it, sure they had some help, but not an invading army. That is the difference between Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya freedom was given to them, in Libya they earned it through sacrifice. It tastes different and it feels different.

This is poorly researched article. they state Dr. El Keib owns a company it is well known he is only a professor even in the UAE. He never worked in Qatar his last job was at the Petroleum Institute as a Professor of Electrical Engineering.

None of the current NTC can run for elections. Elections will give the dissidents and intellectual all the chance they need. Stupid article.
