So true - one thing not mentioned though is that it is in large part due to the pressures on academics to reach research targets and meet unreasonable teaching and admin demands that this is the case. As this is a direct result of changes to University funding, I can't help but wonder if it isn't strategic on the part of governments ... I mean - what better way to silence the dissenters and stop the dissemination of free thought to the next generation?

Capitalism has achieved its goal of managing populations. However the market economy is mathmatically unsound and I feel we are near the end (10 - 20 years) of its reign. I think the lack of left wing intellectuals is because its very hard to look at the world (or even a developed country) and solve the major issues by left wing thinking. Rehashing the ideas of people from a more simplistic time is not being intellectual. A pragmatic approach is essential. An intellectual should not proclaim to be left or right wing. As a musician, left wing thinking does not fully work out for me.

Science fiction ideas are often the most intellectual. For example 'Multivac' (a computer in Asimov stories) controlling core resources to ensure a basic level of support for everyone in the world, and allowing cultural identitiy to remain in the hands of governments and the people.
