In the past, co-operatives could with some reason be dismissed as Utopian experiments with little transformative potential, destined to be contained or crushed by the still-expanding forces of capital. But today they are (part of) the necessary foundation for a new round of working class struggle, to which they will help lend radical content through their function as schools and laboratories of worker self-management and democracy.
