- Alternative Press Center Online Directory
The information in this directory of publications from the US and worldwide is taken from Annotations – a guide to the independent critical press, published by the Alternative Press Center. Last updated Jan 2004.
- Ink: Independent News Collective
Ink, the Independent News Collective, describes itself as a trade association of the radical and alternative press in the UK. It has more than 70 member publications; basic details, subscription and contact information are provided on its website.
Bookshops
- Housmans
Housmans stocks the largest range of radical newsletters, newspapers and magazines of any shop in Britain, with well over 200 different titles regularly in stock.
- Freedom Press Bookshop
The world’s oldest anarchist publisher, Freedom Press publishes the fortnightly Freedom and runs a bookshop (there is a list of publications and an online ordering facility on the website).
- Frontline Books
Hull’s bookshop still has an extensive catalogue, although it has closed its retail outlet to concentrate on digital media and training projects.
- News from Nowhere
Liverpool’s long-surviving radical bookshop has a catalogue of some 1.5 million books available for order online.
- October Books
Not-for-profit cooperative bookshop in Southampton, stocking a wide range of general books for adults and children, as well as speciality areas such as adoption, humanities and social and political issues.
- Wordpower
‘Books to change our world’ – an independent bookshop in Edinburgh.
UK publications
- Corporate Watch
Corporate Watch publishes a bi-monthly newsletter and a free email news list. Its website provides detailed profiles of some of the world’s largest corporations and overviews of each major industry sector, comprising not just a resource for campaigners and journalists but also aiming to provide a comprehensive picture of the reality of our corporate age.
- Direct Action
Quarterly magazine of the anarchist Solidarity Federation..
- Freedom
The world’s oldest anarchist publisher, Freedom Press publishes the fortnightly Freedom and runs a bookshop (there is a list of publications and an online ordering facility on the website).
- Morning Star
A co-operative owned by its readers, the Morning Star bills itself as Britain’s only socialist daily – ‘in hock to no transnational publisher and controlled by no one political party’.
- New Consumer
The bi-monthly New Consumer calls itself ‘the UK’s hottest ethical lifestyle magazine’. It extensive website includes the Ethical Pages directory of green, organic and Fairtrade businesses in the UK (http://www.newconsumer.com/pages).
- New Internationalist
Now into its fourth decade of publishing and with more than 75,000 subscribers worldwide, the New Internationalist is renowned for its radical, campaigning stance on a range of world issues, from the cynical marketing of babymilk in the Majority World to human rights in Burma. Back issues (going back to 1980) are available online a few months after publication.
- Race and Class
Race & Class is the Institute for Race Relations’ quarterly journal on racism, empire and globalisation. The IRR’s website has a wide range of reports, news and comment on related subjects.
- Renewal
Renewal, a quarterly journal of social democracy, was relaunched in 2007 with a refreshed editorial board and a renewed commitment to exploring and expanding the potential of social democratic politics.
- SchNEWS
Brighton-based weekly newsheet, published since 1994. Particularly good on ‘DIY politics’ and the ‘party and protest’ scene that came out of the campaign against the Criminal Justice Act in the mid-1990s.
- Seven magazine
Magazine for politically conscious men and women with an interest in the international arts.
- Socialist Review
Monthly magazine associated with the Socialist Workers Party. Its website includes an archive of back issues.
- Socialist Worker
Revolutionary, anti-capitalist weekly associated with the Socialist Workers Party. The website includes current and back issues, together with news not featured in the paper.
- Soundings
Quarterly journal of politics and culture whose contributors include the likes of Zygmunt Bauman and Stuart Hall.
- Statewatch
Monitoring the state and civil liberties in Europe.
- Tribune
Founded in 1937, Tribune is the only weekly bringing the latest news, views and opinions from the labour movement.
- urban75
The urban75 e-zine describes itself as ‘one of the most popular e-zines on the web with bulletin boards, games, photos, protest, rave, drugs and more’. The site is strictly non-profit.
Overseas publications
This is far from being a comprehensive list, even of English language publications. We have included only a small selection of some of the best-known and most readily available radical publications.
- Adbusters
A not-for-profit, reader-supported, 85,000-circulation magazine concerned about the erosion of the physical and cultural environments by commercial forces, Adbusters is supported by a global network of diverse individuals aiming to topple existing power structures and forge a major shift in the way we live.
- Z Magazine/Znet
An independent monthly magazine guided by a radical left perspective, dedicated to resisting injustice, defending against repression and creating liberty by assisting activist efforts. Z Magazine runs the ZNet website – an incredible source of alternative information used by over a quarter of a million people a week across the world.

- AlterNet.org
Online magazine dedicated to strengthening independent and alternative journalism. AlterNet provides a mix of news, opinion and investigative journalism on a range of subjects.
- Indymedia
Launched by various alternative media organisations and activists in 1999 to provide grassroots coverage of the WTO protests in Seattle, Indymedia is a global network of collectively run, autonomous Independent Media Centres in 50 countries and all continents using open-publishing.
