On this International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, I urge everyone to join this struggle. Together, we can make real and sufficient progress towards the end of poverty.'

United Nations secretary-general Kofi Annan delivered his message on 17 October 2006. During the next 12 months, around 11 million children under the age of five - 30,000 every week - died because of poverty.
