David McLean, the 'Marlboro Man' who appeared in many television and print advertisements for Marlboro cigarettes from the early 1960s, died of cancer at age 73 on this day in 1995.
In fact, McLean was not the only Marlboro Man, nor even the only one to die of cancer, but one of dozens who were used at various times and in various advertising campaigns.
So many, in fact, that Marlboro (conveniently) forgot that one of them had ever worked for the company when Wayne McLaren, who featured in some promotional shots in 1976, decided to embark on an anti-smoking campaign when he contracted lung cancer.
