Four months after the 9/11 attacks on New York and Washington, on 11 January 2002, the first detainees are flown into Camp Delta, Guantanamo Bay, the US military base on the south-east coast of Cuba.

‘On-board the aircraft: (a) Detainees will be shackled (cuffed) to leg and wrist irons connected to belly irons and the aircraft. (b) Detainees will be blindfolded at all times. (c) Detainees gloves will remain in place at all times. (d) Detainees will have ear/hearing muffs on.’
